Vanguard Community Development Corporation
| Home to approximately 8,340 people, the Northend has a proud history as one of Detroit's historic African-American enclaves. Oakland Avenue was once described as the "Gold Coast," due to the strength of its African-American owned businesses. The rich heritage of the community is also apparent in its housing stock which offers a variety of architectural styles. Today, however, the Northend reflects many of the social, economic and physical challenges that many other urban communities are facing. Vanguard Community Development Corporation is building relationships by tapping into the wealth of historic and social resources the community has to offer. As a part of the community which it serves, and with valuable input from the neighborhood's residents, businesses, and other stake holders, Vanguard CDC has been able to assess the challenges and needs of the community and help the neighborhood contribute to its own revitalization program. Vanguard CDC serves families and children living in the Northend neighborhood, bounded by Caniff (n), I-94 (s), I-75 (e),and Woodward (w). | ![]() |
