DCI
Mapping of Eastside Community-Based Organizations
| Beginning in January 2000, Detroit Community Initiative championed a movement to transform neighborhood problem solving in Detroit. At its inception, DCI’s goals were modest – to increase local government attention and services in one of the city’s most troubled areas, an area where DCI has taken the lead in building new affordable housing and promoting quality commercial development for a growing population. DCI’s innovative approach combines traditional community organizing supported by state-of-the art geographic information systems (GIS) technology and the energy and commitment of youth who participate in DCI’s FUTURE LEADERS Summer Program. FUTURE LEADERS prepares neighborhood youth to be leaders within their community by exposing them to the latest computer technology, community issues, problem-solving methods, and entrepreneurial activities. Youth participants receive basic training in GIS technology, complete advanced training for GIS job skills certification, and perform extensive community fieldwork where they collect data on neighborhood housing and environmental conditions. The work of FUTURE LEADERS has led to targeted code enforcement, neighborhood clean-ups, abandoned vehicle removals, building demolitions, community education and successful advocacy by residents for new schools, recreation centers, and businesses. |
